Kinglake, A. W. - The Invasion of the Crimea: Its Origin, and an Account of Its Progress Down to the Death of Lord Raglan. ; Complete Eight Volume Set

Edinburgh and London, William Blackwood and Sons, 1887. Leather Bound. Royal 8vo. Finely bound in 3/4 polished leather. All folding maps, maps, and illustrations are present. The bottom edges of the boards of each volume are rubbed and there is some rubbing to the leading edges of the boards. The top of the spine of volume VIII is a bit abraded. A few spots of rubbing to the spines, but it is not untoward. Bindings tight throughout - no broken hinges. Contents clean. Overall, most handsome in appearance. Alexander William Kinglake (1809-1891) was educated at Eton and Cambridge. After doing the 'Grand Tour' he joined the Inns of Court and became a barrister. In 1854, he followed the British expedition to the Crimea, and was present at the Battle of Alma, and was subsequently invited by Lady Raglan to write the history of the campaign. Volumes I and II first appeared in 1863, volumes III and IV in 1868, volume V in 1875, volume VI in 1880, and volumes VII and VIII in 1887. The DNB notes that 'his history [was] marked by literary ability and skill in dealing with technical matters'. Our offering is a 'made-up' set consisting of mixed editions which were ultimately rebound uniformly in three-quarter polished calf over marbled boards with matching endpapers, five raised bands, and the top edge gilt. Volumes I and II are 5th editions (1874); volumes III and IV are 3rd editions (1884 and 1885); and volumes V, VI, VII, VIII are first editions (1875, 1880, 1887); so presumably this set was made up and re-bound shortly after 1887. Ill.: maps, illustrations.
